Disconnecting the usb cable or turning the console on and off never helped, reinstalling drivers failed, and reinstalling the program failed. As silly as it sounds I would recommend this to anyone having the same problem.
All is working fine now but I guess if it stops I will just repeat the process. I really can’t quite rap my head around it. Did the same process in reverse (figured it doesn’t really matter whether or not it’s in the wall or surge protector at this point) and everything is working just fine again. So I plugged it directly into the wall and after Recording several sessions no problem it did it again. I physically unplugged it from the surge protector and plugged it back in and somehow that fixed it. My console was plugged into a surge protector which I used to turn it on and off along with a number of other devices (trying to keep my boot up time simple). SOLVED! I don’t understand exactly how it works but I got it up and going. I’m stumped! I have never really posted before but here is a little information about my machine. I am not a pro by any means but have successfully recorded using a variety of devices (firebox, Digi002,etc) in both cubase and protools for years. I’m really puzzled why it stopped all of the sudden and would be grateful for any input. If I shut down cubase and go to sound settings in windows, any of the devices plugged in show a level under input microphone, so I know the computer is getting the signal just not the program. My tablet that I use for the behringer 18x console is reading appropriate levels for all the devices plugged into it.

Even if I open the project from a few days back I get the same ASIO driver error for recording and again cubase does not recognize inputs or outputs. On the single project track I have created I have properly set the ins and outs.
In VST connections I have created a single mono bus in input (correlating to the first channel of my device) and in outputs created my stereo pair for playback. Looking under the X18 ASIO Driver tab in device setup I can see that the channel buses I set up are listed as active. I have updated to the most recent driver and firmware (also installed and reinstalled the drivers). When I hit record I get this error, “recording error: ASIO driver is not running.” Under device setup I am using the X18 ASIO Driver that is designed for the device. Loaded it up today and now it seems to not get a signal for any of the inputs or outputs. I recently recorded to cubase LE AI element 9 using my Behringer 18x air with zero problems. See additional comments below and sorry, I thought there was another way of getting it to read as solved.
